POS machine vs POS software: what's the difference?

A POS machine is hardware — the physical terminal, screen, receipt printer, and barcode scanner at your counter. POS software is the program that actually runs the shop: ringing up sales, tracking stock, recording credit, and giving you reports. You need both, but the software is what determines whether your business is well run — the hardware just displays it. In Pakistan, many shop owners search for a "POS machine price" when what they really need is good POS software running on hardware they may already own.

Do you need to buy a special POS machine?
